A good therapist should be willing to tell you when massage is not the right next step. Safety and appropriate referral are part of professional care.
Symptoms That Need More Investigation
Sudden severe pain, significant swelling after injury, unexplained weakness, numbness, persistent night pain, fever, unexplained weight loss, recent major trauma or symptoms that are steadily worsening should be medically assessed.
Referral Is Not A Failure Of Treatment
Knowing when not to treat is just as important as knowing how to treat. Once a medical or physiotherapy concern has been appropriately assessed, massage may still have a useful role in your wider recovery plan.
