Why Your Neck And Shoulders Feel Tight After Desk Work

If you spend most of your day at a desk, you have probably noticed your neck and shoulders feeling tight, heavy, or sore by the afternoon. This is one of the most common concerns I see in the clinic, and the good news is that it usually responds well to the right combination of treatment and small daily changes.

Why This Happens

When we sit for long periods, the head tends to drift forward and the shoulders round inward. The muscles across the top of the shoulders and the base of the neck then have to work continuously to hold the head up. Over hours, days, and weeks, this constant low-level effort leaves the tissue feeling tight and tender.

Screen height, chair position, and how often you move all play a part. The body simply was not designed to stay in one posture for eight hours at a time.

What Can Help

Hands-on sports and remedial massage helps ease the muscular tension, restore movement, and give the area a chance to settle. Alongside treatment, I usually suggest short, regular movement breaks, adjusting your screen to eye level, and a couple of simple mobility movements you can do at your desk.

Every session starts with a short consultation so the treatment is tailored to how your body feels on the day.
